Background

Confucius Institute Universiti Malaysia Pahang (CI UMP) is an institute Mandarin established on 14 November 2018 and collaborated between Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Hebei University (HBU), China. With the approved from Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and Confucius Institute Headquarter (Hanban), CI UMP was officially launched on 14 October 2019 by Education Ministry’s Policy Planning and Coordination Division Secretary, Normah Osman. CI UMP is the first CI at East Coast Malaysia located in UMP Pekan campus and UMP Gambang campus.

CI UMP is the result of collaboration between UMP and HBU on set up a Mandarin Language and Culture Centre (MLCC) since 2011. The main objective of the jointly established CI UMP is to provide educational opportunities related to Mandarin and Chinese culture leading to the award of mutually recognized certificates.

CI UMP has been proactive in providing Mandarin courses and training needs to students, general public and industry, especially for non-native speakers. CI UMP also provides the syllabus to teach and learn the language for TVET. CI UMP also provide intensive courses for candidates to sit Chinese Proficiency Test, also well know as Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), which is a Chinese certificate recognized by global. Our strength is in our trainers who have been flown directly from China in order to share their expertise in Mandarin and Chinese culture with the people of Malaysia.

CI UMP as a platform for cultural exchanges between Malaysia and China as well as a bridge reinforcing friendship and cooperation for both countries. CI UMP is looking forward for more opportunity to Malaysian such as Mandarin teachers training, intercultural between Malaysia and China, China scholarship and others. By being graduates who can speak several languages, this will give them added values and better prospects of being hired.

We are also part of the strong and proactive Academic & International Affairs Department (JHEAA) of UMP. We are proud to be part of this dynamic group and contributing to the growth and successes of JHEAA and the university.

Objectives

1. To develop and provide Mandarin courses;
2. To be a platform for conducting activities and exchanging ideas for students and general public on Mandarin and Chinese culture;
3. To be an International Chinese Test Centre for HSK, HSKK, YCT, etc.
4. To be a hub for disseminating information on Mandarin and Chinese culture, China scholarship, Mandarin teachers training, collaboration of university / industry between Malaysia and China; and
5. To provide consultation and training for general public and industry.
