Chinese Practical Art: Chinese Dumplings Making Mentor-Mentee Programme Received Encouraging Response

Mandarin Language and Culture Centre (MLCC) and Mandarin Language Society (MLS) have co-organised a programme called ‘ Chinese Dumpling Making Mentor-Mentee’ that was held on 7 December 2013 at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP).

Making Chinese dumpling is a Chinese culture of China during Chinese New Year. The shape of Chinese dumpling looks like 'Yuanbao', a type of silver or gold ingot currency used in China until the 20th century. People normally eat Chinese dumpling during Chinese New Year wishing they will earn more money in the coming year. Therefore, making Chinese dumpling together with the whole family symbolises family reunion and harmony.

During the programme, Chinese dumpling making was demonstrated successfully by Miss Peng An Qi, a new volunteer language teacher from Hebei University, China. This program received encouraging responses from UMP students as it managed to attract 80 participants from different backgrounds.

A number of students expressed their excitement as they were given opportunities to make Chinese dumplings and eat them using chopsticks for the first time.

The programme president Ng Wei Jian, a third year student from Faculty of Technology, commented that the event was successful and he thanked the committee members for their cooperation.

Miss Yong Ying Mei, programme advisor and Madam Nornashua Farhani binti Abdul Ghaffar, staff of MLCC were also present and practicing together with the participants during the programme.
