The lunch was prepared by three volunteer teachers from Hanban, China, namely Ju Meng, Sun Yunfeng and Wang Wenying. The invited guests were Ms Yong Ying Mei, Director of MLCC, Dr. Hai Tao, lecturer from Faculty of Computer Systems and Software Engineering, Ms Cheng Ching Yee and Mdm Kang Mei Feng, language teachers from Centre for Modern Languages & Human Sciences (CMLHS). Three volunteer teachers also took the opportunity to demonstrate the process of making Chinese dumpling. Students from the Preparatory Mandarin class both Gambang and Pekan campus expressed their excitement for the opportunity to make Chinese dumpling as well as eating it using chopsticks for the first time. Making dumpling is a culture of China during Chinese New Year. The shape of the dumpling resembles 'Yuanbao', a type of silver or gold ingot currency used in China until the 20th century. People normally eat the dumplings during Chinese New Year while wishing they will earn more money in the coming year. Meanwhile, making dumpling together with the whole family during Chinese New Year symbolises family reunion and harmony. Besides the dumplings, the teachers also prepared some ordinary Chinese dishes such as Coka-cola chicken wings, Kung-pao chicken and Stir-fried shredded potato. These dishes received encouraging responses from students. During the luncheon, Miss Yong Ying Mei, the Director of MLCC, expressedher gratitude to the volunteer teachers for their contributions towards MLCC in particular. |
