Chinese New Year Scroll Writing Competition 2016
Mandarin Language Society (MLS) and Mandarin Language and Culture Centre (MLCC) had organized a Scroll Writing Competition at Astaka, Gambang Campus on 9th March 2016. The opening ceremony was officiated by Dr. Aini Ahmad, Deputy Dean (Academic) of Centre for Modern Languages & Human Sciences. In her welcoming speech, Director of MLCC, Yong Ying Mei, thanked all the participants for supporting MLCC’s effort in promoting this skill. Malaysian Calligraphy Master Hor Chim Sim from Kuantan was invited to give lectures on the useful skills of writing Chinese calligraphy to the participants before the competition begin. Also present were Mr. Liong Ah Kaw, Master Calligraphy, Kang Mei Feng, Program Director Chinese New Year Scroll Writing Competition 2016, Chong Ah Kow, Cheng Ching Yee, Sun Yun Feng, Wang Wen Ying and Ju Meng. The Chinese New Year Scroll Writing Competition had attracted 150 participants who were eager to show their talent in Chinese Calligraphy writing. The competition was divided into two categories: Category A for non-Chinese students and Category B for Chinese students. The 1st prize for the “Non-Chinese Student” and “Chinese Student” categories were won by Norlinda Binti Adsun and Wo Cheak Ting respectively. A new prize category called “The Best Improver” was started this year. This prize category was aimed at comparing students Chinese Caligraphy writing before and after they had attended the lectures by Master Hor. Twenty students with best improvement in their writing Chinese calligraphy were awarded these prizes. The prizes were sponsored by the Calligraphy Master Hor Chim Sim.
