HSK candidates from UMP hits record high
The numbers of UMP students who participated in the HSK or Chinese Proficiency Test in English, reached a new high. A total of 32 UMP students took the HSK Test on 16 April 2016 at Kong Zi Institute, University of Malaya. Among the 32 candidates, 13 of them took the HSK Level 1, 16 sat for HSK Level 2, 2 sat for the HSK Level 3 including 1 who registered for HSK Level 5. The HSK Test is China's only standardized test which measures the proficiency level of non-native speakers of standard Chinese. It is a widely recognized test comparable to TOEFL of English. There are six levels of testing labelled as Level 1, the lowest proficiency, to Level 6, the highest. |

Previously, MLCC had provided HSK intensive classes to guide students to perform well in the HSK test. These HSK intensive classes took place in both Gambang and Pekan campus. The instructors involved were Ms Yong Ying Mei, Director of MLCC, Ms Cheng Ching Yee and Mdm Kang Mei Feng, language teachers from Centre for Modern Languages & Human Sciences (CMLHS). They were assisted by Ms Sun Yunfeng and Ms Wang Wenying, volunteer teachers from Hanban, China. | |
Wan Nurul Nabilah binti Wan Suhaimi, a student from Faculty ofEngineering Technology said that the intensive classes helped her to have better understanding of the HSK test. She also claimed the new version of Mandarin textbook that released this semester provided useful contents in preparing for the HSK test. Hanis Najihah binti Khairul, a Civil Engineering & Earth Resources student who sat for HSK Level 2 expressed her appreciation to MLCC and the instructors in helping her to answer the questions of the HSK test. She said the mock-test that was carried out during the intensive classes had guided her in facing the HSK test. |

Fahad Amirul Aziz bin Baharuddin Aziz, another student from Civil Engineering & Earth Resources who happened to be the first Non-Chinese student who took the HSK Level 5, stated that the training in answering the HSK past year questions was very effective in understanding the format of the HSK test. | |
The UMP students had shown their enthusiasm in learning Mandarin as they took their initiatives to take part in the world recognized language proficiency test. These HSK candidates were qualified to apply for the Confucius Scholarship 2016 for an opportunity to study abroad in China. |
