Mandarin For All: Book 1 awarded the National Book Award 2017
2 May 2017 - Ms. Yong Ying Mei (Director of Mandarin Language and Culture Centre, MLCC) and Ms. Cheng Ching Yee (Mandarin language teacher), the authors of Mandarin For All: Book 1, were awarded The Best Education Book at the National Book Award Ceremony 2017 held at Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
The book, which was designed based on the Chinese proficiency test format, was evaluated by the National Book Development Foundation. The Chinese Proficiency Test or also known as Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), is China’s standardized test to assess the Chinese proficiency of non-native speakers. HSK is a widely recognized test comparable to English’s TOEFL. HSK syllabus corresponds directly to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) which fulfills the requirement of Higher Education Minister to offer language teaching and learning in accordance to the CEFR standard. The book included Mandarin audio with scanning QR code. Students can do revision and practice at any time by scanning the QR code. Director of MLCC, Yong Ying Mei stated that the book is a product of the research grant issued by Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). It is a pre-test book for Chinese proficiency test (HSK) candidates. The book’s effectiveness has been verified as non-native learners were able to learn Mandarin within 28 hours.
