Mandarin Week 2017

Mandarin Language society (MLS) from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) had successfully completed an event called “Mandarin Week 2017” from 2nd to 5th May 2017. It was held at UMP Gambang and Pekan Campus. The main objectives for this programme were to promote the Mandarin Language and Chinese culture throughout the activities that were carried out during the Mandarin Week for all the races in UMP.

The opening ceremony on was officiated by the Dean of Modern Language and Human Sciences, Prof Madya Dr Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab at the UMP Pekan library. Earlier, UMP Mandarin Language Society (MLS) advisor - Madam Kang Mei Feng, expressed her gratitude in the welcoming speech. Also present at the opening ceremony were Pekan Education officer, Mr Mohd Faizal Bin Ismail; Deputy Chief librarian, Mr Dzull Zabarod Ahmad; Madam Lim Lee Chern (Headmistress), teachers and 40 students from SJK(C) Yoke Hwa; Madam Kamariah, teachers and 35 students from SK Indera Shahbandar and a reporter from Sin Chew Daily.

Several activities were launched at the library which included Mandarin language and cultural exhibition featuring Paper-cutting decoration, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Tea and Chopstick demonstration. Other interesting activities were Mandarin Learning Corner with storytelling, Escape Room for non-Chinese and Chinese student to play and to enjoy learning mandarin via audio, visual and games.

While in UMP Gambang Campus, there were book fair, general knowledge competition and Mandarin Carnival Week. The book fair had attracted more than 80 students to visit the booth. This exhibition provides an opportunity for the students to expose themselves with Mandarin books. General Knowledge competition was open to all students in UMP. A total of 63 students were enrolled and participated. Through this competition, participants will not only increase their general knowledge of Chinese culture, but also cultivate students' interest and enthusiasm for Chinese culture. Participants who scored the most point were selected as winners. Mandarin Carnival Week was held to provide an opportunity for UMP students to further understand and appreciate the Chinese culture, tradition and food.

The four days event on both campus managed to attract huge interest in Mandarin language among students.
