12 April 2017 – A Newspaper Handover ceremony was successfully organized by the Mandarin Language and Culture Centre (MLCC). This year, Dato’ Andrew Wong Kean Hwee, a special officer of Ministry of Transport, is sponsoring MLCC with a one year supply of Sin Chew Daily newspaper.
In his speech, Dato’ Andrew Wong Kean Hwee encouraged students to be aware of and understand the current issue that is happening in the society, country as well as the world through reading the newspaper. He said that “people nowadays like to share news via online without distinguishing the authenticity of the information obtained”. Dato’ Andrew Wong Kean Hwee also emphasized the importance of reading the news through proper media. He explained that “the demand for the usage of Mandarin will increase in the East Coast region of Peninsular Malaysia in the future due to the strong influence of China’s economy, especially so with China’s ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative and its implementation in Malaysia-China Industrial Park (MCKIP)”. He even encouraged students in mastering Mandarin for their future careers.
The Director of MLCC, Yong Ying Mei, delivered her welcoming speech by expressing her gratitude to Dato’ Andrew Wong Kean Hwee for his generosity in sponsoring Sin Chew Daily for the year 2017. The ceremony was officiated by Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Nubli Bin Abdul Wahab, the Dean of Modern Languages and Human Sciences.
Also present were Mr Pang Yon Hing (East Cost Chief Reporter for Sin Chew Daily), Mr Tan Kian Seng (East Coast Area Executive for Sin Chew Daily’s Education Programme), Ms Cheng Ching Yee, Ms Sun Yunfeng, Ms Ju Meng, Ms Shao Zhenglan, Ms Zhang Weiqing (Mandarin language teachers) and Madam Nornashua Farhani Binti Abdul Ghaffar (Administration Assistant).
